Who is this carpenter, and why is he so mad?
This blog is operated by The Mad Carpenter, aka David Mc Girr.
I graduated from the University of Ulster in 2008 with a first class honours degree in Media Studies with a minor in Film Studies. Since graduation I have been unable to get any sort of job, and have been on Jobseekers allowance (That’s welfare to the Americans) for 3 months.
The main problem with being unemployed is the boredom. Day after day of handing out cv’s, sitting around the house, watching hour after hour of tv…
So I decided to follow in the steps of my grandfather: when he was unemployed, he made things. And generally his material of choice was wood. It is possible with wood to create something utterly simple and utterly functional, which keeping a tactile beauty about it. The first thing people do when they see a nice table or varnished piece of wood? They run their fingers over it.
So I’m carrying on his tradition and making things in a time when money is tight, and time is near limitless. I will try and find ingenious solutions to little problems, I will try and create something timeless with the minimum of cost. Strange and odd projects, slapping together disparate materials: franken-carpentry.
I am David Mc Girr – I’m the mad carpenter.
