The Mad Carpenter’s Top Ten Pictures
So at the end of this year… Year nine I guess since we reset everything. As is the tradition with television and the internet it’s time to make a top ten. So since I haven’t completed ten projects this year (I’m aware that I am not a very productive carpenter) I’m going to pick my ten favourite pictures of this year. As is usual, we shall start at number ten.
The second picture of the year, and my tenth favourite because it is a perfect picture. It makes me look good.

Before…
I got the number one.
Extra Monday
My brother Eamon was hired to be an extra in a TG4 production known as Ealu II, a series of recreations of famous prison breakouts from Irish prisons, mostly during the early 20th century (That’s 1900’s) It features stories from both male and female prisoners, and from what I’ve seen today, it looks really good.

Yet another Thursday
You know, I was trying to fish something out of my teeth before I took the picture and the camera went off. I decided to put it up because this has sort of become mostly about the 365 project, and I’m trying to give you a glimpse into every aspect of my life.
So here’s a picture of me, trying to get a chunk of sandwich out of my teeth with my tongue. Enjoy!
The Wake Wood
Would anyone like to see a blurry out of focus me standing behind Timothy Spall, from the set of The Wake Wood?
Click here if you do. Or If you just want to see production stills and information about the first Hammer Horror film in about 30 years.
The picture of the man in the white apron, Timothy freakin’ Spall, behind him is a figure with a dark hat on. the figure has an orange spark in front of him. That’s me! Check that out.
I’ll keep you guys updated with… updates about the film as and when I get them.
My home made demotivator
Generally I wouldn’t post a demotivator, but I made this one, and I’ve wanted to for a while. My buddy Savo in the picture there.
Saturday On The Beach
Finally a bit of good weather came our way, and once Ed, Aidan and Greg landed round at Ruth and Senan’s place and off we went to The Bridge Club.
Which involved driving over a lot of tiny bridges, and farting around in rivers. We explored the beach, went spelunking and generally had a blast. Most fun I’ve had in a long time. Once more, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves after the jump.
Hat Week Day 12: Special Guest
Hello there Mad Carpenter fans; you’re in for a treat today because you’re meeting my younger sister Stephanie (again) but since this is hat week she’s here to show off her hats.

Clockwise from top left:
1. Black instripe trilby: a fairly recent purchase – Pennys of Letterkenny
2. Black and White Dogtooth trilby: worn in perfectly – Pennys of Letterkenny
3. Blue Engineer’s cap: One of the earliest hats – Can’t remember
4. Black and Red trilby: Found a matching shirt – Pennys of Letterkenny
She’s becoming quite the hat enthusiast. Pennys isn’t a hat shop or anything, it’s just a chain clothing store in Ireland and the UK. So it just goes to show what a little determination and a small budget can get you these days. Just keep your eyes open and you can find some real treasures.
Edit: Stephanie found a nice grey trilby in a charity shop on the morning of the 7th, I’ll get her to email me a picture as soon as possible for inclusion in this article.
My picture after the jump because sadly I’m not wearing a hat today. I’ve run out of hats to take pictures of. Sure I have a beanie or two, but those are necessary hats, not fashion hats. I do have one or two more hat related articles though, then it’s back to regular service.
Hat Week Day 6: The Outback Hat
Once more unto the breach… Day 6 of hat week.
This is probably my least worn hat of late, it is the dirtiest, it is the lowest quality, it is essentially the worst. But damn it all if I don’t love it. It’s the first real hat I ever bought.

Well that’s not strictly true, there was one other proper hat first. Used to wear it all the time. Unfortunately I only hat it for about 3 months until it got stolen. As such it’s very hard to track down a picture of that hat, so here’s the best I’ve got.

Oh the horrors of youth. And disposable film cameras…. But yes, that was a great hat, it was really inexpensive, and if I saw it again, I’d buy it again.
More info after the jump.
The day it all changes
Today, Thursday the 26th of February, The Mad Carpenter finally gets his own camera. No more borrowed, no more low quality, no more webcam (unless for webcam related things)
I bought the Canon Powershot A470. I’ve had it for 3 hours and I’m already in love with it. It has super macro mode, meaning I can take REALLY REALLY close up photos. It’s a fantastic camera, and I’m thrilled to have it. It even make me look good

I know, WHAT ABOUT THE CARPENTRY?! I hear you scream across the internet. Well don’t despair, because by Monday night you’ll have a tool review (of my cheap power tools) and my opinions on flat packed furniture, because I’ve built a bookcase today.
Look at the detail on that… super macro mode rules.

Ash Wednsday
Cycled down to the post office today to look for my social welfare, alas, it’s not there until tomorrow, and I get a chunk of back pay, so Dave is on easy street this weekend. Dave is also going home this weekend, to a decent freakin’ camera.
I only noticed it was Ash Wednesday because I saw a woman in the post office with a cross on her head, and it threw me a little.

Holy hell, the vivitar produced a decent result.
Thinking about cutting my hair, any ideas for styles?
Did absolutely nothing today
Not a thing. Well, I finished reading the archive of a webcomic I started reading a few days ago. It’s really good and I suggest you all read it. But you know, be prepared to read back through 4 years of archive to get all the in jokes.

Anyway, today’s picture. In my room again, probably going to get an early night. Cooking dinner tomorrow, so I may put up a recipe, or some action cooking shots if I can get the vivitar working. Ooh, forgot to mention thinking about getting a decent camera - A canon powershot.
It’s hard to disagree with the features for the price, so I think I’ll get it either this week or next, depending on cash flow. If anyone can suggest a better camera for a cheaper price, I’m all ears.

EDIT: Got so wrapped up in all the news and non-news that I forgot to post the picture. There we go, all done.
The Mad Carpenter: tech hacker
Ok, so I’ve been geeking on tech-hack all night, and I’ve been reminded of something I’ve wanted to do for months.

I bought an old camera in a charity shop, and was devastated when I found that they no longer made film for it. Hours of searching on the internet revealed that some people modified the old film canisters to take 35 mm film. Now, for a camera designed to be ridiculously simple, that seems complicated.
So I came up with an even more complicated idea! Why not strip out the innards and replace them with the innards of a digital camera? Then you’d have the look of a classically designed old camera, with the functionality of a digital camera.
I’ve never tried a tech hack before, but it seems right up my street. As soon as I gather all the relevant materials: digital camera to be wrecked, jewelers tools set, super glue and the instamatic body.
I’ll keep you posted as soon as I get started.
The mario cube project is still on hold, I don’t have paint supplies or a work bench…
Also planning on building a workbench. And I’ve been commissioned to build another coffin, so it’ll be fancier than the first. I’m thinking gold accents. It’ll be great
Seems like the mad carpenter is going to be very busy in the coming weeks and months. Thanks for the support.
