Devolution passed!

March 10, 2010 · Posted in Real life sort of stuff, Stuff · Comment

It’s over. Devolution passed. Now Stormont has control over all of it’s own affairs, and the terrorists can go home.

For those of you out there that don’t know, ever since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, they have been trying to transfer power from London to Belfast in a process know as devolution.

The main issues have been:

1. The dismantling of the paramilitary (terrorist) groups in Northern Ireland.
2. The removal of the British Army and it’s bases.
3. Establishment of Power Sharing between the main political parties.
4. The devolution of policing and other services.

There are more issues than that, but those are the main ones.

The paramilitaries have disarmed (mostly).

The army are gone.

Power sharing is here.

And as linked above, the police are devolving.

There’s no point fighting any more on the part of the terrorists. All you’ll be doing is killing other Northerners. You can plant bombs, shoot cops, whatever it is you want to do… but there’s no point.

You’re not fighting for Britain or Ireland any more.

All you’re doing is blowing up your own people. Which is fairness, is what you’ve been doing this whole time.

It’s over. There are years of healing to go yet. I give it two generations before no one gives a shit any more.

It’s over lads. It’s over.

Still sitting around with the buddies. Becky might be moving in. Which I think is fantastic news. She’s a stilt walker, circus performer and prop maker. She alters her own clothes, and all that sort of stuff.

Frank’s an animator, Mary plays music, Sin writes, and I work with wood. We could start a little commune. If you want to see a picture of Becky, look after the jump.

My brother Eamon was hired to be an extra in a TG4 production known as Ealu II, a series of recreations of famous prison breakouts from Irish prisons, mostly during the early 20th century (That’s 1900’s) It features stories from both male and female prisoners, and from what I’ve seen today, it looks really good.

Pictures and more info after the jump.

Zinc Saucier Edition 1 – Biscuits

April 16, 2009 · Posted in Stuff, Table Polishing · 4 Comments

Why hello there and welcome to Edition 1 of…

The Mad Carpenter cooks. Or – The Zinc Saucier.
Name the reference, get a shout out.

I’ve wanted to cook home style southern Biscuits for ages. It’s something that’s been cemented into my cultural knowledge of America: Biscuits and gravy.

After much research into the subject I found a recipe I could follow, and that would explain that shortening was hog fat, and I could just use butter instead.

Biscuits

Don’t they look fantastic? Sin and I also made some home made fried chicken, which didn’t turn out fantastically, but it was still good.

I didn’t find out what the “gravy” part was until after we had eaten, and apparently it’s sausage grease, with flour and milk in it. And chunks of sausage.

The cost of all the stuff for the biscuits was less than 7 or 8 euros, and the batch of 12 biscuits did 3 people for one meal, and the rest did me another 2 meals. They’re tasty, but I imagine since I didn’t use buttermilk or hog fat, they were just big tasty scones. It took me an hour, and I’ve never really baked before.

So go for it. Make some biscuits.

Government to make cigarettes invisible: teen smoking to end as a result

March 4, 2009 · Posted in Alcohol, Real life sort of stuff, Stuff · 1 Comment

Ah today has made me mad. Well, a lot of things make me mad, but it was something in particular today.

Just to let you know, I’m a smoker. I like smoking, it gives me a series of little lifts throughout the day and it’s a great social thing, now that we’ve all been relegated to a special cage outside.

But this is just a stupid piece of legislation, that will only make purchasing cigarettes legally more awkward for patrons and business operators.

Government to ban all cigarettes from view

Now… excuse me if I’m missing something fundamental here, pushes glasses up nose , but how exactly do legislators think that hiding cigarettes from view will stop teenagers smoking? It’s already patently clear that kids are getting cigarettes from somewhere, so they’re probably aware of where they are in the first place. This is a time wasting bullshit piece of legislation that won’t do anything but hinder the purchase of a legal product by legal adults, of legal age. Legally.

Feel free to chime in on the comments. Maybe we could use this as a petition of sorts… say if we were to hit 100 comments, then maybe we could send it to the government registering our supreme disappointment at this bone-headed, reactionist, bullshit move to hustle tax payers.

I’m mad I say. MAD!

Participation Friday, number 1

February 13, 2009 · Posted in 365 project, Stuff · 1 Comment

A merry Friday the 13th to one and all.

Now, I’ve called this post participation Friday, because I want each and every one of my readers to take a picture of themselves, upload it somewhere, as detailed in yesterday’s post, and then send me the Link. Any pictures that I get sent, I shall upload them in a separate post so that my readers can show themselves off to the world.

Maybe I’ll do a participation Friday ever week, maybe just every few weeks when the notion strikes me. So get your freaky gear on, snap yourself a shot, and send me a link.

You don’t want to take a picture today? Then dig up Halloween one, that’ll do it.

Guess who got mentioned on national radio?

January 23, 2009 · Posted in Carpentry, Stuff, Table Polishing, Woodworking · 4 Comments

That’d be me. I was mentioned on the Ray Foley Show yesterday.
On Today FM, one of the national radio stations of Ireland.

So there you go. Minor fame. Don’t discount local publicity outside of the internet.
Hundreds of views in a single day, due to a little mention on the radio.

Thanks Ray.

Well… that was an interesting week

January 23, 2009 · Posted in 365 project, Real life sort of stuff, Stuff · 1 Comment

Ok so first off, I haven’t been able to take pictures this last week, haven’t had a camera or Internet. I’ll do something to make it up to you in the coming weeks, I’m open to suggestions. It has been a seriously tough week, being without Internet, scraping by on what little money we had, just trying to stay warm in the coldest house in Letterkenny during the worst weekend (weather wise) in years. It’s been hard, but it’s been worth it.

I’m out living with friends, we’ll have Internet very soon, and a phone, and my money will be sorted out very soon. It’s all going to be ok…. I’m sure of it. Right?

january-23rd

Oh yeah, my pocket watches arrived during the week. They’re nice. A little small, but nice. Good, solid… bullet proof.
pocket-watch

When all my shit is sorted out, and I can settle down for 5 minutes I’ll get everything back on track.

Flying car off to Timbuktu

January 16, 2009 · Posted in Engineering, Stuff · Comment

Oh you are going to love this one. I know I do.

A FLYLING FUCKING CAR is setting off from London to Timbuktu in Africa.

Some complete nutter decided to build himself a flying car. And it works so, naturally, he’s flying to Timbuktu to prove his point. This is a fabulous innovation and crazy people always get the best things done. I’m immediatly a big fan of this guy, because he’s a self tought engineer, and I’m trying to be a self tought carpenter. I’ve got an affinity to this dude in a big way.

The nutter element of society: those guys trying to build the space elevator, flying cars, the fellas farting about that designed atomic bombs and neuclear fusion…

If you happen to have a few hundred dollars lying around…

Feel absolutely free to buy this for me.
No pressure or anything, just mentioning it in an off-hand sort of way.

Isn’t it just fantastic? Picture me riding around Letterkenny on that, wearing a top hat and tailcoat. Help make the world a weirder place. I’m performing a public service really.
